Drew - 14 years old!

 Dear Drew,

We can't believe you are 14!!!  

8th grade is going well for you and you are loving playing football for your school.  You have the best team spirit and are always so pumped up about your game.  Football is quite the commitment, due to the heat at times you've had early practice before school.  You've had to get to school by 5:15 am and then you shower and eat breakfast at school before heading to class.  

Soccer is going ok, but it has been rough with half your team off playing high school soccer.  It has been hard to get enough kids to play for each game.  You have been going to practices twice a week in the evenings often after just having football.  You are definitely worn out.

You have started reffing outdoor soccer some and you are doing well.  The parents of the players can't be brutal, but you are doing a good job ignoring him.  Dad and I each went to some of your early games just to make sure parents were decent to you.  You are now comfortable just being dropped off and picked when you are done reffing.  

You took your first of two driver ed classes this past weekend.  You learned so much and took so many notes.  You'll finish up your 2nd class next weekend and then you will drive 6 hours within a couple weeks  with an instructor.  We also need to take you soon to get your actual permit at the DMV.  

This year for your birthday you didn't want a party, but you wanted to go to a Chiefs game.  So you and dad went last night and unfortunately the Chiefs lost to the Bills after a weather delay.  You guys definitely didn't pick a very good game to go to.  But I think you both made the best of it and enjoyed a good amount of the game.  

You (and I) just got over Covid.  Your first day back after almost two weeks to school happened to fall on your birthday - what a birthday treat!  It was a rough road having to stay home and masked up when around others, but you handled it well and made the best of it.

Wyatt - 7 years old!

 Dear Wyatt,

We really can't believe you are 7 years old!  Happy birthday!

We celebrated your birthday a couple weeks ago with your friends.  You had 8 boys over and you played flag football, basketball, and had lots of water gun wars.  You also had a pinata.  It was a fun-filled crazy two hours.  Your big brother and sister were huge helps during the party.  We had pizza and you requested a KC Chiefs cookie cake.  

On your actual birthday you had a soccer game and so did Drew.  The Chiefs also had their first game of the season and they won!  You were really excited the first game was on your birthday.  We got take out from Jalapeños and I made you a chocolate cake and we had cookies and cream ice cream.  

You loved opening your presents.  You got a dinosaur mask, hulk hands, a new watch, lots of Chiefs gear, a football book with stickers, and some gift cards.

We celebrated your birthday on the Howell side at the lake over Labor Day weekend.  We have done this a couple times and you always enjoy a lake birthday celebration.  We'll be celebrating with my side in the near future at a park. 

This past month you started first grade and you are so excited you got Mrs. Kudrna as your teacher (so am I).  Your best buddies in your class so far are Easton and Sutton.  This year you also get to play with kids from the other classes at recess and you are loving that.  You have so many boys to play with, your grade is so big they added a 4th class right before school started.  You love playing with Decker, Harrison, Cash, among many others.  

You and I enjoy walking to schools some mornings.  Winston also loves we are walking because he gets to join us.  You especially love when we get to school early enough for you to swing before school.  You just love swinging and jumping off a swing. 

Flag football has started and you are loving it.  You almost had a touch down during your first game, it was so close! 

You have also started soccer.  You seem to enjoy being on SBV Futures and you get to be on a team with 3 school friends.  

We went to the doctor a few days before your birthday for your check up, here are your stats:

Winston update

 One year ago today we picked up our sweet little bundle of joy in Iowa.  It is hard to believe we've had Winston for a whole year.  Looking back at pictures it is hard to believe he was such a tiny baby boy!

Winston turned a year old on June 27th.  He weighed 62 lbs 6 ounces and today almost two months later he weighs about the same.  He ended up being the perfect size lab.  He may be just a tad shorter than Patton was and about about her same weight (at least when she was young).  

Winston loves playing fetch, loves to be chased, and spends a ton of time chewing bones.  He likes to be right next to us and spends most of his time following me around.  He is very snuggly and loves laying on the couch with us.  He often grabs his bone and comes to sit on top of our laps while he chews his bone.  Winston does need to be watched carefully, if he has a free moment he will get into the trash, chew on a rug, or grab something that doesn't belong to him.  

Recently we discovered that Winston loves watching and running along side the kids on their motorcycles.  Winston runs back and forth in our front yard while the kids ride around the cul de sac.  If the kids are on the motorcycles and he's inside - he runs full speed from the front door to the garage door and peeks through the windows.  Yesterday, Winston got to swim at Pa & Toots' house.  He loved and swam and swam.  When I would make him rest by putting him on his leash, he'd sit and bark until I let him back in the pool.  

He is a great walking partner and especially loves when we go for a walk with his brother, Louie.  We all love his sweetness and love having him part of our family.  It is amazing how our hearts grew when he became part of the family.  Patton will always be our first pup we loved and Winston just taught us how our hearts can grow even after sadness.  We love you sweet Winst!

Wyatt January 13 - August 12th

 Dear Wy-Man,

It has been long time since I've updated.  Oops!  

So much has happened since January.  You finished up your kindergarten year.  You had the best kindergarten year.  You loved having Mr. B as a teacher.  In fact you were so sad when was school was ending in May because you knew he wouldn't be your teacher anymore.  When we'd go through pictures this summer and you saw one of Mr. B you got sad.  Mr. B sent a video to your class this summer to say hi and you said "I really miss him."  I cannot express how happy it makes me you had a teacher that left such an impression on you. I'm so happy you can stop by and see him when you are in first grade.

You learned so much in kindergarten and loved coming home and telling us about it.  You made great little buddies and Mr. B had so many nice words to say about you.  He said you were a born leader and everyone always wanted to be friends with you.  That's huge buddy, that will take you far in life.  You also were a great helper and always jumping in to help other.  That makes Dad and I so proud!

This past January and February you played basketball and you did really well.  We were so impressed how well you dribbled.  You loved taking the ball down the court and you were always ready to shoot a basket.  You looked so confident out there.  You played soccer with the same team this past spring and enjoyed it.  You also played baseball this past spring and into the summer.  You did great in the field and were an especially great first baseman.  You made quite a few outs at first.  You also had some great hits and some games with not so great hits.  You are a perfectionist with everything so it was hard for you during the games you didn't hit well.  Overall you had a great season and had lots of fun.  

This summer you spent most of your time swimming.  You joined Anna on swim team and LOVED it.  You had practice at 8:00 during the week and you got up happy every day to go.  If practice was canceled due to weather you would get upset.  You dove off the blocks from day one and swam your little heart out.  You were the youngest on the team, the only 6 year old.  You were in the 8 and under division so it wasn't easy to get ribbons, but you surprised us and got a few.  We are just so proud of what a brave little dude you are.  You do things your bother and sister would have never done at your age.  

You loved watching the olympics this summer, especially the swimming.  I am pretty sure you think you are headed to the Olympics in the future.  

This summer you did some reading tutoring with Mrs. Kudrna to make sure you are ready for first grade.  She said you are more than ready.  I shouldn't have been surprised.  You are smarty pants.  Once again you are a perfectionist, so when you read to me you get frustrated the second you don't know a word.  But you really do so well.  I think you are more than ready to get school started.  You miss seeing friends every day and you loved the learning part of school too.

We are so proud of you Wyatt and we can't wait to see what you do in first grade!

Anna January 13 - August 12 (Birthday & 11 year old stats)

Dear Anna,

I have not been great about blogging lately.  So here I am trying to cram in 8 months of stuff!  It has been a crazy and busy 8 months too.

In January you headed back to school after winter break.  You finished up your 5th grade year wearing masks to school everyday and staying with your class for everything -you weren't allowed to mix with other classes for lunch or recess, or even 5th grade graduation activities.  It was a bummer of way to end elementary school, but you handled it well.  It helped that the majority of your friends were in your class and the few you didn't have class with you played sports with.  

You finished up basketball in February and you really enjoyed it this year.  You did however get frustrated at times.  You love your team because they are all from school, but there was a very obvious divide on who really loved playing and was good at the game compared to some who never had played or the few that really didn't want to be there.  Dad and I were so impressed with your knowledge of the game and how aggressive you were.  It was so much fun watching.

In the spring you played volleyball with your same team and you guys did amazing.  You really improved a ton and got second in your division.  Your team got to the point that you were volleying back in forth in all your games.  It was fun to watch.

For your birthday this year you opted not to have a party because you really wanted to paint your room. So dad and I painted your room and bathroom.  I painted your vanity in your bathroom with gray chalk paint.  You got a new rug for your room (Willow had destroyed your old one) and you got a new bedspread.  You also got some new wall art and room decor. You really like little fake plants.  

You did have Brooke over for a sleepover to celebrate your birthday and we went to Florida to visit Pa and Toots right after your birthday.  

You graduated 5th grade in May.  You had a very low key celebration at school due to Covid, but we did get to clap out the 5th graders on the playground on the last day.  I was really upset that we didn't get to do much, but you seemed happy with how it all happened and that is what is most important.  You were a bit sad about leaving elementary school, but you also have looked forward to middle school all summer.  You are so ready for more responsibilities.  Wyatt will sure miss having you at school though. It was a lot of fun for the two of you to have a year in school together, even if the year was so strange with covid!

Soccer took a turn for the worst after the winter outdoor season.  You lost some players, whom you really liked.  You were sad to see those girls leave and go to another team.  From winter on we kept hearing about other girls on your team who would be leaving after the spring season.  So we had to start looking for a new club.  It was not a fun journey for you.  You began to question if you wanted to play soccer anymore. Your buddy, Leah decided she would be done with soccer after the spring.  This was hard for you.  Dad and I pushed you to keep your mind open and give soccer another chance on a new team with a new coach.  We tried three different clubs from March - May and went to quite a few practices to get to the know the coaches and players.  In the end you found a great team and tried out in June for Puma.  You got on their best team in your age group and are now playing division one soccer again.  

You have played in one tournament so far and your team won 2 and lost one.  It was so fun for you to get a couple wins under your belt after the spring season your last team had.  I'm looking forward to seeing how this year goes for you.  

This summer you spent your time swimming like crazy.  You did swim team again and this year you had virtual meets except for champs.  Champs was in person.  It ended up being nice having virtual meets - it meant the meets went faster.  You swam 50 yards for the first time this season and you loved being able to do flip turns.  You did really well and loved every second of it.  You were so motivated to improve your time when it came to the meets.  You say you want to swim all year round, we'll see if we can squeeze that in.  

You are about to embark on a new journey - middle school.  I can tell you are a bit nervous about how the friendships are going to change and how it will go with having another elementary school merge with all the kids you have gone to school with since kindergarten.  I'm not worried about you, I know you will be challenged and have hard days - but you will do great.

Drew Update (January 12-August 11) (almost 14 year old stats)

 Dear Drew,

I've done a terrible job keeping up with the blog, so here is one big update.

You started back to school on the hybrid schedule in February (2 days at school, 2 days at home) and after spring break (late March) you finally got to go to school full time through the end of the year.  You never really complained too much about being home so much this past year, but you seemed so happy once you got back to school full time.  You loved being able to see all your friends at school and not just the first half of the alphabet.  You loved your time riding the bus home with your friends.  Track started in April and you did great.  You ran the 800 and mile and loved both of them.  You also tried the long jump and the 100 meter hurdles.  

The basketball season ended in February.  You played your last game with the Panthers (next year you all move to school basketball).  You guys made it to the final game, but lost.  It was a bummer, the game was pretty close.  You enjoyed your 23KC tournaments this past winter and hopefully we'll get you back into some skill sessions soon.  

In May we officially gave you a phone.  You do a pretty good job with it.  You don't have social media and haven't really asked for it.  You don't always take it with you places, but you are very responsible when you do take it with you.  I'm pretty darn strict when it comes to screen time, but you are such a good kid you don't complain much.  

This summer you've been busy with football camp at the middle school, HUW Williams soccer camp during a very hot week, soccer camp at the high school, and speed and agility training at the high school.  You seem to love it all.  You also did a pre-tryout soccer camp and tried out for Sporting Blue Valley soccer club.  They didn't end up having room on their teams, so you are sticking with Legends another year.  

You have become quite the fisherman this last 9 months.  You love going fishing in the ponds in the neighboring neighborhood.  You also did some fishing at the lake and in Colorado in July.  You don't seem to catch a lot of fish, but it doesn't stop you from trying.  Your buddy, Lucas is always up for some fishing with you. 

You got your bottom braces on in June. Your canine top teeth are really starting to move down, so you smile has changed quite a bit.  

You have also grown a ton and changed so much since January.  Your voice is way deeper and at the end of July you were 5 ft 6.5 inches (1/2 inches shorter than me - yikes).  You were also 102 pounds.  I'm pretty sure by your birthday you will be taller than me, I really am not ready for that.  Looking back at pictures from June until now your face has changed a ton.  Your hair is also ten shades lighter in the summer, it is crazy how much your hair changes - everyone thinks you dyed it.  

I can't believe 8th grade is about to happen.  You say you aren't ready for school to start, but I think you are looking forward to seeing your friends.

Howell Family Dentistry has moved!

 Mike's office moved into its new home in December.  It was a long time coming and I'm just so proud of Mike's hard work.  The office turned out beautifully!  It was in the plans for years and once the land was found it quickly turned into an amazing space.  

Winston and Willow Update

 Willow

Life with Willow has been a lot of fun, especially for Anna.  She is loving having a furry roommate.  Willow spends almost all her time in Anna's room.  We haven't brought her downstairs to roam much since Winston joined the family.  But within the last month, Willow has become a free roamer in Anna's room all day and all night.  Before that she was in a pen, but got plenty of time she could roam Anna's room while Anna was in there.  The main reason Willow is free roaming is she was waking Anna at night when she bored in her pen.  She seems to be much happier now.  Bunnies don't sleep all night or all day, they seem to nap here and there.  She does quite well and enjoys having more space.  

Willow is very social and loves to hop to everyone who comes to visit her, but she still does not like being held.  So she isn't quite the snuggly bunny, Anna was hoping for.  Willow does love being pet on her nose and behind her ears.  Having a bunny has proven to be quite a bit of work, but Anna does about 99.9% of the work and is very responsible.  She cleans her cage area and litter box often and without having to be asked.  She also feeds Willow twice a day and is great about making sure Willow has water.  When Willow turned 6 months she was spayed and then shortly after her recovery started reaching less bunny pellets and got to start eating vegetables.  Anna loves chopping up and serving vegetable to her.  All on her own, Anna started chopping and mixing Willows veggies several meals at at time and storing them in the fridge, I'm quite impressed with how she's come up with all her bunny routines. Anna even talked Mike into starting a YouTube Channel and she discusses different parts about having a bunny.  

Willow seems to be a very brave bunny, she has never really feared Winston when we've had them together.  Willow also absolutely loves the vacuum.  She comes right up to the vacuum.  This behavior shows us this sweet bunny would never survive in the wild!  

Winston

Our sweet little pup is getting so big.  He is coming up on 7 months.  He was just weighed and now weighs just over 50 lbs.  Winston is such a great dog.  He is very sweet and loving.  He is the best snuggler.  Winston and I enjoy our quiet mornings together, he chews a bone while I workout next to him each morning.  Winston loves playing with the kids, he often chases Wyatt around the house, rough houses with Mike and Drew and Anna loves snuggling with him.  In the evenings Winston is often on the couch snugging Mike.  Winston gives his daddy the best welcomes each morning before Mike leaves for work and also gives him the best welcome homes.  Winston and I walk most days and we usually go about 2.5 miles.  We sometimes run part of that walk and Winston is a great runner and will be a great partner as he gets older.  Winston does so well on a leash, we started the prong/choke collar at about 5 moths and he's so good.  He knows how to heal on his walks and also has been trained to stop and sit at the end of the sidewalks before entering the street.  

Winston has decided that he likes to explore and we often find him in the basement or updates sniffing around.  We'd prefer he stays on the main floor, so this is a work in progress.  Earlier this month Winston had his first bath and he went to a groomer for this.  He had a de-shedding treatment in hopes of the shedding would slow down.  Luckily it has helped a lot, there is still hair - but not near as much.  

Winston usually gets to see his brother Louie once a week.  We've been to the dog park quite a few times and often meet up for walks.  The two pups love seeing each other and love to wrestle.  It often means they are exhausted and nap the rest of the day, it is a win for all.  It is fun being able to take Winston places, he enjoys getting out and exploring.  He is buckled when in the car, because he sometimes gets a little too interested in exploring the car.  Hoping with age, he'll get a bit better in this department.  But we are thankful he likes the car and likes getting out and about.  

We are looking forward to some lake trips in the future!

Drew Update 13 - 13 and 3 months

 Dear Drew,

Here's your update from October 12-January 11

Well, there have been some great times and then some very very hard times.  

You are doing well in school and you've done a ton of school at home.  You did go to school on the hybrid schedule for a short time (2 days at school, 2 days at home, repeat).  You have been home everyday since December, but next week you get to start the hybrid schedule again.  You have found a groove at home and truly I think you enjoy rolling out of bed and starting school minutes later.  You like the extra time at home when the little two aren't here.  You have enjoyed a lot of free time, since you get your work done quickly.  You like to play basketball inside, watch more tv than you should, and every once in a while I let you play video games.  You really like the perk of me bringing you ice cream or lunch randomly on your days at home.  

In late October, you lost your soccer teammate, Austin (and his older brother) to murder.  It was such a hard time trying to parent you through that. It wasn't anything dad or I ever imagined we'd have to talk to you about.  You handled it quite well and helped me come up with a way to honor Austin.  We had wristbands made with Austin's number and you and your teammates wear them to your games.  Your first game back after Austin's death there was a moment of silence on the field, it was very emotional for all.  I'm impressed with how you have handled it.  You have asked some tough questions and had some tears.  We will always try hard to keep Austin's memory alive.

Back to a more typical update, you have been busy with indoor soccer and basketball.  You practice soccer once a week outside (most often it is very cold) and once a week inside.  You are also practicing basketball about twice a week.  You are have played quite a few tournament with your 23KC team and you are enjoying the level of competition.  You also love playing on your friend team (Panthers).  Due to covid and schools closing down their gyms, you haven't had many practices with your Panther team, but will get to start up again soon.  It has been so fun seeing you improve on the court and you truly love basketball.  Soccer is still your favorite and indoor has been fun to watch.  

Cross county ended up being a very short season.  You were supposed to run in three meets but the second meet was canceled due to weather.  You proved to be quite the runner and you really enjoyed competing.  Hoping you'll get to run a full XC season next year, although you are pushing to play football in 8th grade.  

On Halloween you dressed up as Mahomes at the Super Bowl Parade.  I was quite impressed with your idea and how you put it all together.  You went over to Oliver's house for dinner and then trick or treated with your friends.  Hard to believe you are about done with trick or treating!  

You have been a big help with Winston.  You are often in charge of taking care of him during the day if I have to go somewhere.  You are very responsible and enjoy your pup quite a bit.  You even took him on a walk around the block on your own.  Winston is doing really well on the leash and on walks, so it is great that you are able to take him out.  

You are doing pretty well with your braces (minus a couple lost brackets).  Your surgery in early October has allowed for your canine teeth to start coming down and we area going to the ortho every 4 weeks right now.  You just had a few more brackets put on so we are moving along with treatment, still no braces on the lower teeth.

Wyatt update 6 through 6 years and 4 months

 September 13-Jan 12th 

Dear Wyatt,

School has been in session since my last post.  You started your kindergarten year with the hybrid schedule and let's just say you like going to school more than you like doing school at home.  You did ok during zoom calls, but you really missed socializing with your friends during that time.  Since October you've been going to school in person, 5 days a week.  You were a mask every day at school and you never complain.  You love school and you really love your teacher, Mr. B.  Your teacher is the most perfect fit for you.  He enjoys your fun and silly personality and gives you plenty of space to be you.

One of the first weeks of school you came home and told me you were drawing poop with chalk on the playground...and what did Mr. B do?  He drew a toilet with chalk for your poop.  Mr. B. says you are a born leader and that so many kids like you and want to play with you.  You are learning to share and how to lead.  We really are proud of you and often wonder where did you get your personality?  You are very different from you siblings!  You are a very confident kid and you don't have a filter (which is hilarious, but also a bit scary at times).  I did hear from one of the moms in the class that you kissed her daughter.  Yes, during a pandemic you took your mask off and kissed a girl.  You told me she had a choice between you and another boy in your class, she picked you so the other little boy told on the two of you.  I never did hear from your teacher about this, but we did have to have a bit of talk about how kissing in kindergarten is not appropriate!

Your reading is coming along.  You are impressed with yourself when you can sound out a word.  You are flying through your sight words and way ahead of where you need to be according to your teacher.  I think things with reading about about to really click for you and it is so much fun watching it all.  My dream is you become someone who loves to read (like your mom and your brother (at bedtime).  Your number sense has sky rocketed since school started.  You can count past 100 and know how to add, you just started working on subtraction.  I love being amazed with your little brain!

You played soccer this past fall and loved it.  We saw you use a ton of skills you  learned last year when you did practices with Anna's club.  Kindergarten soccer doesn't alway lend itself to skills, but in time these skills will come in handy.  

You just started basketball a few days ago.  You have done a lot of work on your dribbling in the last couple months and you really seem to understand how the game works.  So we are excited to see how the games go, they start up in a few weeks.  

You really love your puppy, Winston.  You like to get him to chase you around the house.  You often get sad and start crying about Patton still too.  You like to take Winston on walks with me and you love that Winston wants to run after you and keep up with you.

You seem to be ahead of your kindergarten self and fight me daily on wearing a coat to school or to anywhere.  So most days you head into school with your coat in your backpack and walk to the car with your coat in your backpack....I've learned to pick my battles.  

We love you so much Wyatt and are loving watching you grow each and every month.  I really can't believe you are about 1/2 done with kindergarten!

Anna - huge update June 12-January 12th (10 years 4-9months)

 Dear Anna,

Wow, I have been neglecting this blog big time.  I haven not updated your life since June.  So let's hope I can remember all the important stuff that has happened.  This past summer you weren't near as busy as normal, but I think you liked the laid back feel.  You did get to do a shorter swim team season and you didn't compete in any meets against other teams.  It was still nice for you to have practices for several though and you got to enjoy hanging out with your swim buddies.  

 You also did zoom soccer training all summer, so most evenings we could find you (and Drew) in the garage working on your fitness and skills.  You had soccer try outs in the summer and made your same teams again.  You are playing for 2010 and 2009 Academy teams.  You have had so many soccer changes in the last 12 months it is crazy.  Your team moved to a new club after some crazy life circumstances with your last coach/club.  Neither of your teams have won very many games since you were last coached by Jason in February of 2020, but we are hoping your team gets through this slump and Coach Andrew can boost your teams' confidence.  

You played volleyball this past fall and you had fun.  With Covid you didn't get to practice indoors so your coach found a sand volleyball court and you enjoyed that.  Your team did ok, but the main focus with volleyball is to have fun and you did that!

The biggest changes for you lately have been being a bunny mom to Willow.  You are very responsible when it comes to Willow.  She is not just a pet you can leave and forget.  Willow needs lots of attention and you do it all.  I have been very amazed by the amount of responsibly you have shown.  Willow is now free roaming without a cage in your room.  You really pushed us to let Willow free roam, you wrote a letter trying to convince us too.  You have to feed Willow two meals a day, she eats pellets (bunny food) and vegetables morning and night.  She also eats hay all day long.  Willow also requires litter box training and being brushed regularly and you do all that.  Willow is a bit of a messy girl so you are also always cleaning up her area.  

You have also loved having a puppy around.   You love your Winston boy and you like snuggling him.  You have been helpful with taking him outside and feeding him from time to time.  You also like to brush him. You have become quite the pet caretaker.  

You have also started to take more pride in your room lately.  You want it decluttered, clean and decorated.  It doesn't always work great with Willow around, but I love that you want a nice space.  

School is going well for you.  You started the year in Hybrid and did fine when distance learning at home. You have learned so much about how to turn assignments in online.  You love your teacher this year and you have a great group of friends in your class too.  You do well going to school every day now (since October) and wearing a mask.  You are very responsible about turning work in and doing your best.  You had a conference in October and your teacher told us what a great student you are.  

Basketball is going strong now.  You did a couple months of skills sessions and it really helped you improve your dribbling and shooting.  You love playing basketball with your school buddies.  Dad and I love watching your confidence on the court.  You are a feisty little girl!

Over winter break you started a Youtube bunny channel.  You and Drew have worked on the content together and Drew is your cameraman.  It is fun seeing you creative side, show through.
